Theresa Grimsley's Story
My First Year: Help From ReadWriteThink
Throughout my first year of teaching, I have found both NCTE and ReadWriteThink to be wonderful resources in my classroom. I was inspired by a recent article from NCTE where educators were encouraged to "write on stage." I completely agree with the idea that teachers always talk about writing, but seldom write themselves, at least not in front of their students. I often write with my students, but the idea of writing in front of them seemed a little intimidating. I did it, though, and I feel like we all learned from it. They got to see me think aloud, make mistakes and adjustments and they were able to see me as a writer!
I have used the classroom newspaper lesson plan from ReadWriteThink.org. I expanded this lesson plan to create my school's first school newspaper! I am happy to say that many students submit pieces for the paper, and my group of "staff" members continues to grow. It is absolutely true that if students have an authentic reason for writing, they will write and they will strive to write well. What I find truly wonderful about this project is that not only are the writers building their confidence, but those who are interested in photography and media, are working as photographers, etc. They are able to pursue the things that they love while becoming better readers and writers!
I don’t know what I would do without ReadWriteThink.org and NCTE. They are invaluable resources that help me to stay up-to-date on new information and new strategies in the classroom.
Grades 3 – 5 | Lesson Plan | Unit
Students write authentic newspaper stories, including learning about various aspects of newspapers, such as writing an article, online articles, newspaper reading habits, and layout and design techniques.
This is my school's first school newspaper! Many students submit pieces for the paper.
I am currently in my first year of teaching and enjoy it tremendously! I enjoy writing, reading, white water rafting and hiking when I'm not teaching.
