Davy Crockett was born in 1786.
|Grades||7 – 12|
|Calendar Activity Type||Historical Figure & Event|
David (aka Davy) Crockett was born in Hawkins County, Tennessee in 1786, and died during the Battle of the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas in 1836. Crockett was a frontier explorer, adventurer, politician, and soldier. His life inspired many stories that were exaggerated into tall tales of his adventures in the frontier lands of the United States.
Perhaps better known to students for his adventures on the American frontier, Davy Crockett was also a politician who served in the Tennessee legislature and who represented the state in the U.S. Congress.
Share "Crockett's Rules for the Guidance of Politicians" from Life of David Crockett (1860) with your class. In this excerpt from his biography, Crockett outlines how to have a successful career in politics. After reading the piece (or selected excerpts) with your students, consider whether present-day politicians follow Crockett's advice.
Students might conclude the exploration with a reflection on how much (or how little) life in the political sphere has changed. Encourage students to account for the reasons why some political practices change over time, as well as to consider the reasons why some practices remain the same even in very different settings.
