- Download and print copies of the poems that students read in the first session:
- “How Do I Love Thee?” by Elizabeth Barrett Browning
- “The Bean Eaters” by Gwendolyn Brooks
- “On My First Son” by Ben Jonson
- “My Papa’s Waltz” by Theodore Roethke (audio version)
- “How Do I Love Thee?” by Elizabeth Barrett Browning
- Make copies or overhead transparencies of the handouts for the lesson: Guiding Questions for Reading Poems About Love, Found Poem Instructions, Sample Found Poem, Student Assessment Sheet, and Found Poem Rubric.
- Prior to the first session, decide what text students will use for their found poems:
- Students can write a journal entry for homework, as described below.
- Students can choose a story from The Mystery of Love Website. Be sure to check the Love Stories on the site to ensure that all are appropriate for the classroom. If desired, you can choose several stories from the site to focus students’ selection.
- If students need a more structured writing experience to create their memoirs, complete the ReadWriteThink lesson plan Family Memoir: Getting Acquainted With Generations Before Us before this lesson plan or incorporate the memoir-writing activity as a part of this lesson.
- Students can write a journal entry for homework, as described below.
