1. Select five appropriate titles with strong female protagonists (see the Suggested Booklist).

2. Familiarize yourself with the five selected titles and prepare a synopsis of each to share with your students during Session 1. Divide each title into four approximately equal sections for suggested reading assignments.

3. Prepare some broad discussion questions specific to each selected title for use in classroom literature circles.

4. Make one copy for each student of the Online Literature Circles: Self Assessment form.

5. Visit the Teenreads.com website and familiarize yourself with the Word of Mouth and Monthly Poll features (links on the left side of the page).

Make sure all students have personal e-mail accounts. If you are using school computers for the lesson, verify that students will be able to access their e-mail from school.

Note: Because many school policies place restrictions upon the exchange of e-mail messages, adapt the lesson to meet the technology policies and resources of your school. Such adaptations include:

E-Mail Exchanges
As a homework assignment, students could be asked to read texts and send e-mail responses to a partner or to all members of the online literature circle. Because parental control settings on Internet service providers are often set to receive e-mail only from specified safe addresses, parents should be asked to add the addresses of the studentsí e-mail pen pals to the approved list on their childís account.
Discussion Boards
Many schools use a software platform such as Blackboard to facilitate communication within the school system. A Blackboard system enables each teacher to post assignments and organize discussion boards for class topics. Teachers who have access to this type of platform could create a literature discussion board so that students could post their responses through the discussion board rather than through individual e-mail accounts.
6. If you will be using a school computer lab, reserve time in the lab for e-mail exchanges (each session) and for student exploration of Teenreads.com (Session 6).
