OVERVIEW

This lesson is designed to help students effectively find information on the Internet using the basic features of a kid-friendly search engine. They learn how to use keywords to conduct an effective Internet search and how to refine a keyword search to yield more relevant results. They also learn how to scan search results to identify the best sites for the desired information. After a guided sample search and several structured search tasks, students apply the search strategies presented in the lesson to research a topic for an expository or persuasive essay.

  • "Knowing how, when, and where to locate useful information on the Internet will become an increasingly important component of the literacy curriculum, especially because the availability of information resources and search technologies is expanding rapidly, increasing the importance of effective search strategies."¯

  • "New skills and strategies are required in this context to successfully comprehend information such as how to search for appropriate information; how to comprehend search engine results; how to make correct inferences about information that will be found at any hyperlink, how to determine the extent to which authors "shape" information presented on a webpage; how to coordinate and synthesize vast amounts of information, presented in multiple media formats, from a nearly unlimited set of sources; and how to know which informational elements require attention and which ones may be ignored."¯

  • It is essential to help students become competent in the new literacies, which are increasingly important for acquiring knowledge. To better equip our students to function successfully in today's society, teachers must prepare students to search effectively and read critically on the Internet.
