Students analyzing a play can map out the key elements of character, setting, conflict, and resolution for a variety purposes. This interactive is aimed at secondary students.

- Students should read Beloved, another one of the Suggested Texts, or any literary work with significant internal conflict and dialogue. If applicable, read the "Teaching Racially Sensitive Literature: A Teacher's Guide" and decide which activities or approaches would be appropriate for the work and the students who will be reading it.
- As part of your instruction of the novel, focus on literary elements that will be necessary for the completion of the ten-minute play activity. Discuss with students plot as the sequence of events in a narrative; the creation of character through direct and indirect characterization; the rendering of symbol through detail; and motif in connection to theme. - You may also wish to refer to one or more of the following ReadWriteThink lessons to help students review plot, characterization, symbolism, and theme:
