I am wondering why students don't have text in front of them. The purpose is for them to learn to look back in the text to answer thin questions and to infer when faced with thick questions, yet when you read aloud to them...aren't you simply checking listening comprehension?

Although the lesson is posted for grades 3-5, it is very appropriate for my high school students as well. The thinking is similiar, but the text gets more complicated.

I use thick and thin questions cross-curricular. It really helps in helps when teaching "explain why or how" in math.
