OVERVIEW

As a pre-reading visualization activity before reading The Cay by Theodore Taylor, groups choose a Caribbean island to study.  Groups do research on the island of their choosing and create a final product in the format of their choice.  Finally, groups present their research and final product to the rest of the class to share the information they learned through their island study.

FROM THEORY TO PRACTICE

"...the language arts students shared their results and insights in class.  Once into the class reading, that shared knowledge helped students work through a difficult section of the novel by providing a common reference point" (25).

In this lesson, students do a pre-reading research activity to study the setting of the novel, The Cay-the Caribbean islands.  By studying the history, geography, and other factual information about the islands described in the novel, students are able to use visualization to internalize vital knowledge needed for understanding the setting of the novel.
