STAR Search: How Do I Find the Book I Need?

The STAR Search process outlines the steps an intermediate learner goes through in locating resources in the library for information gathering. Steps introduced in this overview lesson include selecting the appropriate search tool, selecting the subject heading(s) for successful searching, determining the kinds of resources needed, applying location strategies, and examining/evaluating a resource to determine if it will meet the information need. These steps should be reviewed and reinforced throughout the year using a variety of topics.
Literacy involves locating and using a variety of information sources. To satisfy a need for information, students need to develop and use successful strategies for identification of a variety of potential sources. The first standard from the American Association of School Librarians' National Guidelines Document for Information Literacy Skills states that "The student who is information literate accesses information efficiently and effectively." Librarian Kathryn Johnston notes: "One recent problem that students have in locating information is that they-and their instructors-assume that everything is on the Internet. But many subjects are not covered on the Net and are addressed best by using traditional books, articles, or government reports." (102) This lesson focuses on a strategy students can use to locate appropriate research information in the library.
