MATERIALS AND TECHNOLOGY
- Notebook or construction paper booklet with three to five sheets of lined paper
- Overhead projector with transparencies or a whiteboard
- Word wall or word list
|1.||This lesson plan has students practice authentic writing that communicates information about events that are important to their lives.
|2.||Decide which writing skill or strategy your students need to learn based on observations and an analysis of student writing. If it is the beginning of the year, you may want to conduct minilessons on how to brainstorm a list of possible topics, select one to write about, and focus the topic. For example, if a student selects "going to a birthday party" as her topic, you will want to show her how to narrow the focus to one interesting thing that happened at the party. Then she can write with detail about that focused topic. Other possible minilessons can focus on the writing process, spelling, or language conventions.
|3.||Prepare a model of your own Weekend News entry or plan to create a draft in front of students. Be sure that the model includes an example of the skill or strategy you are planning to teach in the minilesson. You will always want to model what you want students to do in their writing. You can also model the skill or strategy using students' writing.
|4.||Prepare writing booklets for your students. Your paper choice should be based on the needs of your students and may change as the year progresses. You may choose to have students use one booklet for all of their writing or use smaller booklets that contain only one or two stories. Kindergarten students may begin the year with paper that has a place to draw a picture of a weekend activity and second graders may end the year using a notebook with lines only.
