Activity Description

Who wants to be cooped up when beautiful summer days beckon? This reading and writing activity gets children outside and encourages them to explore the world around them, whether it’s in their own backyards, in the woods during hikes, or at parks or beaches. Children practice looking closely at living things in their natural environments and then make their own books about what they see.

Why This Is Helpful

This activity encourages children to ask questions and make connections that will help them improve their reading and writing skills. By observing a living thing carefully, taking notes about it, and then writing a story, children learn about the natural world around them and get to enjoy some summer beauty firsthand.
