Activity Description
In this activity, the Word Mover mobile app is used to create a word bank of as many rhyming words as possible. Start by placing one word on the screen (such as "cat"), and have the child add as many words to that word family as he/she can. After the list is generated, activities include sorting real and nonsense words, alphabetizing words, and adding extra words to create a poem or story with as many of the Fantastically Fun Word Family words as possible.
Why This Is Helpful
Using rhyme to play with words and word families will equip emerging readers with the skills needed to read and write new words, and it will ultimately help develop their phonemic awareness. Talking about how words fit into families and sorting words into real and nonsense categories will help children become more “word conscious,” and alphabetizing words will help reinforce the alphabetic principle. Writing poems or stories using the words will stretch children’s creativity.
