Activity Description
As children get older, it is important to teach them about a whole range of safety issues—the challenge is to do this in a fun and meaningful way. Start by sharing Officer Buckle and Gloria by Peggy Rathmann, a funny book that covers a wide range of safety do’s and don’ts. After talking about different safety problems and their possible solutions, write a letter to someone in your community about an important safety issue.
Why This Is Helpful
Recognizing problems and talking about solutions are skills that help children develop awareness of themselves and their surroundings, two insights that are important to help them stay safe. In this activity children get to write a letter, which helps them practice writing and shows them a “real-life” purpose for writing. Writing a letter captures children’s attention because they are writing about something connected to their personal interests.
This activity was modified from the ReadWriteThink lesson plan “Safety Tips With Officer Buckle and Gloria.”
