Send a Smile: Make a Card for a Special Occasion

Activity Description
Children have fun making a personal holiday greeting card or invitation for a friend or family member. They decorate the outside and inside of the card with their own artwork, write a poem, limerick, funny or catchy saying that communicates their personal sentiment, whether humorous or heartfelt, then sign the card and send it off or deliver it.
Why This Is Helpful
Children think about the meanings behind various holidays and events in their lives, as well as their relationships with whomever they’re making the card for. They also have the opportunity to have fun with words, fostering a sense of the dynamics of language to communicate feelings and ideas, such as:
- why is this funny?
- why does this sound appealing (rhyme, rhythm)?
- why does one word make better sense than another?
