Stories of Appreciation
|Grades||K – 3|
|Activity Time||60-90 minutes|
Many children do not think about the numerous ways they are helped everyday by those around them. Expressing appreciation in writing to those people is a skill that can be taught through this activity. After reading the short autobiographical book Thank You, Mr. Falker by Patricia Polacco, children practice this skill by creating simple, custom-made books to pay tribute to a family member, a teacher, someone in their community, or another favorite person.
Learning to show appreciation in writing is a skill that will benefit children later in life. Additionally, the template provided or the templates at Tikatok provide sentence starters to help young children begin writing sentences in a formulaic way that express their opinions. They will reflect and express their feelings to finish statements such as “I love my grandma because she _____” and “I love it when together we _____ .” Because children are able to share their online or printed creations, they have an audience for their writing which makes the writing experience more authentic. Also, even very young children like to interact with technology. Nicknamed “digital natives,” children need exposure to safe web tools, such as Tikatok, that provide them the opportunity to be creative.
