Activity Description

After reading aloud one or more Corduroy books (with a favorite stuffed bear as the guest of honor!), invite children to be “author for a day” and imagine what kind of adventure a stuffed animal might have at home. Will he have a day like Corduroy’s or one that’s very different? Will he be a shy and timid fellow or outrageously silly and mischievous? Encourage children to be as creative as they like when it comes to their story, because there’s no right or wrong when it comes to self-expression!

Why This Is Helpful

Children love being read to, especially by the important people in their lives. However, when they are given the chance to respond in some way to what has been read, a whole new world opens up. They are able to talk about what was read, share opinions, and imagine different plots and endings. And when they are able to express and share these thoughts through writing, they gain a deeper understanding of this important way of communicating. By connecting their writing to something meaningful to them—in this case, a favorite stuffed animal—you’ll see their imaginations blossom even more.
