You Want Me to Buy What? Exploring Ads

Activity Description
Advertisers spend a lot of money to draw in consumers, and tweens and teens are a growing segment of the market they hope to reach. This activity helps children to become thinking consumers by teaching them how to look for, understand, and often see through the advertising tactics and messages presented in the mass media.
Why This Is Helpful
Whether teens realize it or not, advertisers have a huge impact on our daily lives. Culturally, they help determine what’s hot and what’s not and, closer to home, they influence how our money is spent. This activity encourages teens to notice the role of advertising in our society and also gives them tools to interpret and analyze the hundreds of ads they are exposed to on a daily basis. By thinking critically about ads, teens can make decisions about what they do or do not purchase and can also see how ads shape our thinking and behavior.
