What Should I Read Aloud? A Guide to 200 Best-Selling Picture Books by Nancy A. Anderson (International Reading Association, 2007)
What Should I Read Aloud? is a helpful resource for parents, caregivers, or teachers who would like guidance in selecting picture books for children. Using research conducted by Publishers Weekly, author Nancy A. Anderson compiled a list of children's picture books that have made the all-time best-selling list.
Nostalgia mixes with new discoveries as readers of this book recall their own childhood favorites and learn about the "new classics" that have since been published. Chapters are divided by suggested age levels; within each chapter Anderson further categorizes books by topic or theme and provides a brief summary of each book. If you have ever wondered what you should be reading to your child or felt totally overwhelmed in the children's books section, this book is a perfect place to start.

Emily lingers over cookies and coffee with her book club (a fabulous group of moms and teachers) as they discuss their book reading venture. The group members each selected one or more chapters from What Should I Read Aloud? that pertained to their children. They then embarked on a month-long quest to read aloud as many of those books as they could with their children. What was a hit and what wasn't? Listen in as they discuss what they think makes these books memorable best-sellers and which were their favorites to read aloud.
Emily shares part of her interview with best-selling, award-winning author Jane Yolen. Jane Yolen's How Do Dinosaur series has become a hit with children and parents and is one of the series listed in Nancy Anderson's What Should I Read Aloud?
