Helpful Information for the Can You Convince Me? Crossword Puzzle

Looking for a little help? This persuasive essay was written by a second grader. See if you are convinced and look for clues to help you solve the puzzle. You'll be an argument expert in no time!

This student is trying to persuade, or convince, his parents that he needs a new bike.

Bicycle
I Want a New Bike

If I had a new bike I would have more fun. Wouldn't you be happier if you were having fun? I would. I'll tell you three reasons why I should have a new bike.
The highlighted sentence is this student's claim. He is stating that he has three reasons to get a new bike.

This is this student's first reason or argument for getting a new bike.
If I had a new bike, I would have a softer landing when I jumped my ramp. My old bike has a plastic seat. My new bike would have a padded seat. Without a soft landing, jumping off the ramp hurts. I just saw on a commercial that the bike I want is on sale, but the sale is going to end this week. If you want to get me a bike at a good deal, this is the time to do it. That's one reason why I think I should have a new bike.
A commercial is a TV ad that tries to get you to buy something.

This bike is on sale. The student is trying to build a sense of urgency. He wants his parents to buy the bike NOW! This is an example of kairos.
Danny Parks is a big name and gives weight to this student's argument.
Next, if I had a new bike I could do tricks. If I practice my tricks like Pro BMX Freestyle Rider Danny Parks, I'll be a pro. If I become a pro, then I'll have a good job. Danny Parks has been riding BMX bikes for about 20 years and has gotten jobs at the Gravity Games, X Games, and as a writer for ESPN. Since I will have a good job I'll become rich. Now, that's a great reason to buy me a new bike.
Using research is one way to make your argument more convincing.
If I had a new bike I would not play my Xbox as much. Some studies have shown that kids that play too many video games might fight more or not do as well in school. I would spend my afternoons riding my new bike with my friends and that would be much healthier. Just riding my bike for 2 hours a day would make me healthier and stronger.
Logos is using numbers or facts to support your claim.

This student is trying to make himself sound trustworthy to his parents. This is an example of Ethos.
Finally, if you buy the bike I want, I will do extra chores this summer. I know that it's important to work hard for the things that you want, and I plan to show you that I can work hard for this bike. I gave you three reasons, but my fourth reason is that I will be VERY HAPPY!
Now, the student is appealing to his parents' emotions. Every parent wants their kids to be happy. This is called Pathos.
