Sir Sounds Alike and the Dragons
Everyone in the kingdom thought Sir Sounds Alike was a brave and handsome knight,
Yet he was afraid to go too far from home or get into a fight.
Hungry giants came and ate everything in the kingdom far and near,
But Sir Sounds Alike hid under his covers and said that he didn't hear.
Then eight witches rode on their broomsticks and tried to turn the king into a toad.
Sir Sounds Alike hid in the back of his wagon on the side of the road.
(He told everyone his wagon wheel had broken and he was waiting for it to be towed.)
Finally four dreadful dragons made their home nearby, breathing fire all the night.
The townspeople hid in their houses, quivering with fright.
When the sun rose the dragons slept, and snored, and sighed.
Their every breath tipped rows of houses over; there was no place to hide.
A week went by, the dragons raged, the people cried and moaned.
Then the king's son, Prince Henry, called Sir Sounds Alike to his throne.
(The knight wrung his hands, knowing the prince would say, "Out the dragons must be thrown!")
"You must ride," the prince said "and get those dragons out of here."
"I will obey, my lord," said the knight, weak and quivering with fear.
For two whole days he sat at home and wondered what to do,
But then it came to him! He'd show those beasts just what he knew.
He rode and rode and rode some more until he found their cave,
And then he walked right up, as if he were very brave.
"Come out you dragons, come out I say, and tell me one thing.
Where do you find a read tale? Tell me and you can stay here and sing."
"A red tail?" the dragons said, "Why that is a simple trick."
And they fired their flames up from their mouths and stuck their tails in quick.
The tails turned red, very red, and the dragons jumped into the sea.
The knight he laughed and danced around with glee.
(For you see, the answer to his riddle was simple: the library!) |
